Koos Bekker is CEO of Naspers, the emerging markets media group operating in 129 countries. Koos Bekker: Biography

Koos Bekker is known as the Rupert Murdoch of South Africa. Cape Town-based Naspers, the company he has run since 1997, has its hands in Internet, pay-TV, magazines, newspapers, books and private education and has investments in China, India, Russia and 126 other countries in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa. That includes stakes in China’s Internet and instant messaging leader Tencent Holdings (run by Chinese billionaire Ma Huateng), Russian Internet giant Mail.ru and Brazilian magazine publisher Abril. Naspers pulled in revenues of $4.5 billion in the year through March 2012. During his tenure, Bekker has overseen a rise in the market capitalization of Naspers from about $600 million to $25 billion – all the while drawing no salary, bonus, or benefits. He is compensated via stock option grants that vest over time, but has exercised and sold just a small portion of his options. Bekker was a director of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and a founding director of mobile telecom firm MTN. His Babylonstoren estate, nearly 600 acres in South Africa’s Western Cape region, features architecture dating back to 1690, a farm, orchard and vineyard, a 14-room hotel and a restaurant.

Mr. Jacobus Petrus Bekker, Koos has been the Group Chief Executive Officer of Naspers Ltd. since April 1, 2008 and served as its Managing Director since April 2008. Mr. Bekker served as Chief Executive Officer of MIH Holdings until 1997. He co-founded MIH Holdings in 1985 and has held a variety of positions within its group of companies. He led the Founding team of M-Net. He serves as the Chairman of M-Web Holdings. He has been a Director of Naspers Ltd. since 1997. He serves as a Director of SSIH, M-Net Ltd., M-Cell, Media24, Nasboek and SuperSport International. He has been a Non-Executive Director of Tencent Holdings Ltd. since November 14, 2012. He also serves as a Director of a number of South African print media companies. He serves as a Director of Myriad International Holdings B.V. He served as a Director of NetHold from September 1995 to April 1997; MIH Holdings and MIH Limited since September 1998. He served as a Founding Director of MTN and Director of OpenTV Corp. Mr. Bekker obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in law and an honours degree in languages at the University of Stellenbosch in 1974 and 1975 respectively. He obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from University of the Witwatersrand in 1978 and an MBA from Columbia University in 1984. He was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in commerce from the University of Stellenbosch.
